Jamel Bland is a Landscape Photographer and Engineer based in Seattle Washington.

I am originally from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago. It is there that I developed a deep and lasting connection with nature. I loved exploring the verdant green forests and wild coasts of the island. My grandfather and mother were avid photographers, and later in life, I would find out that my dad and his father were also passionate about photography.

In 2008 I moved to Seattle to begin work at The Boeing Co.. The incredible beauty of the West Coast lured me back into the places I loved. The forests, the mountains and the coastlines there were absolutely breathtaking and this is where I began taking photos of these incredible spaces.

I push the boundaries of photography as far as I can, since it opens up the design space and unlocks the full magic and potential of the moment. Astrophotography as an example, is one skillset, that opens up the compositional and creative options a photographer has, while pushing the camera and software technology to their limits.

The images I seek to create are vivid, full of form, color and dynamic range. Some take months of planning and luck to achieve, since weather conditions, stellar alignments, tides and other natural phenomena must all align in order to achieve the compositions I seek.

I hope that this style and these images resonate with you.

My Creative Experience

I tossed and turned and ground my teeth while dreaming of loss. The loss of a friend, of something innocent, naive and magical, taken from me by brutal natural forces. I woke up, sat on the edge of my bed, and looked out the window at the dark sky. The discomfort of my dream, spilled over into reality, pushing me to find a sanctuary where wonder still exists.

Nothing motivates like the need to survive, and soon I was headed to my somewhere. I watched as the night released its grip and a faint glow of light appeared on the horizon. I was alone, with the wind, the stars and the trees. Nothing matters more than the present when trying to capture a moment of wonder. If we're not connected, touching the land, listening to the air, searching for the light, we'll miss the magic. I've come this far to claim a talisman of protection. To serve as a power against cynicism and monotony by reminding us that places exist that are amazing, uncorrupted and magical.
